Roof Moss & Algae Damage

If you live in an area where high humidity is prevalent, then you should keep a careful eye out for roof moss and algae damage. Similar roof stains include mildew, mold and lichen. And, regardess of the cause of any stains you see on your roof, those stains are telling you that your roof’s stability and effectiveness are being compromised. We recommend taking advantage of our free roof inspection should you notice any stains on any portion of your roof.

Most commonly found on west and north facing roof surfaces, these substances grow well in highly shaded areas where sunlight exposure is minimal. After a heavy rain, these west and north facing roof areas don’t dry as quickly as other more sunny parts of your roof and provide a prime breeding ground for moss and algae growth. Left untreated, moss and algae on your roof will hold more and more moisture, and consequently, accelerate the growth and spread of the stained look of your roof quickly, resulting in more and more damage to all roofing material.

Roofing Algae Damage

Even though roofing algae damage is not directly caused by the algae (it is the moisture retention that causes water damage to the roof), leaving moss or algae on your roof will eventually compromise the materials of your roof. Taking some precautionary measures if you live in a humidity-prone area is a wise decision. Some practical things you can do include:

• Keep organic debris, like branches and leaves off your roof, deck or patio

• Cut back branches that overhang your roof, deck or other roofed areas to allow direct sunlight to do its work and to provide your roof(s) with good aeration.

• Use of commercial moss and algae removers may prevent them from returning. These cleaners work best when applied while moss and algae are actively growing and when the weather is dry.
